Have you heard the news, friend?! The talk of TikTok being banned is a hot topic of conversation around the United States right now.
Honestly, this talk has been circulating since 2020 and possibly even before then due to privacy concerns, but it’s not until now that we’re seeing some actual follow through.
Last Wednesday, the U.S. Senate approved a bill that would ban the app from devices issued by federal agencies.
Several states have additionally issued the ban on state-issued devices, including Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Utah and more.
So, will TikTok as a whole be banned in 2023? Who really knows!
But here’s what I do know ➡️ it’s not the first time an app like this went extinct.
Before TikTok there was Vine.
Before Facebook there was MySpace.
Before people implemented blogs on their website, there was Tumblr.
Time and time again we have seen that we have ZERO. CONTROL. over our social media and we have absolutely no clue when an app will be banned, deleted or lose its need.
This is why as a blog and email writer for business owners, I preach that you need to create your content in a place where you own it FIRST and then use that content to drive the rest of what you do everywhere else.
There’s two main places where you own your content / followers: your website and your email list.
Long-form content on your website often comes in the form of blog posts and gets to be the place where you:
✔️ provide ultimate value to your current AND future audience
✔️ position yourself as a thought leader in your industry
✔️ can house all of your best content and refer to it for years to come
Over the years people have started to overlook this type of content thanks to social media, but if you want to set yourself up for the long haul of your business or brand instead of being forced to start from scratch when a platform disappears, this is where your attention should be!
And I get it - social media feels like the quick and easy way to get content out to your people.
And I’ll totally admit that writing a blog post might take you longer than filming a quick TikTok video or writing an Instagram caption.
But choosing to ignore this type of content now is doing a massive disservice to yourself in the future.
So, if you’re ready to quit putting all of your eggs into your social media and lean into the fact that blogs really freaking matter in your business, you’re in the right place!
